Vad är det som verkligen skapar hållbarhet i en människas liv och vad kan du Du som företagsägare/styrelseledamot/arbetsgivare satsa på för att driva ett hållbart framgångsrikt företag?
Jag har största delen av hela mitt liv arbetat med människor som jobbar med människor (vård och omsorg) som chef och ledaren inom kvalitet, arbetsmiljö och miljö, arbetsledare på gym och tränings- och kostinstruktör, företagshälsa, mentor, chefscoach utbildare och föreläsare. Sedan 90-talet har de flesta företagen erbjudit sina medarbetare subvention för träningskort vilket har bidragit till att Sverige förmodligen har flest gym per Capita i inom EU. Vid ungefär samma tid började företagshälsorna växa. Gå till psykolog uppfattades som märkligt och människor som blev sjukskrivna för utbrändhet var svaga.
Så vad har hänt på snart 30 år? De små gymmen har köpt upp av stora kedjor, företagshälsovården täljer guld, var och varannan människa går till psykolog och mer än hälften av alla sjukskrivningar beror på psykisk ohälsa. Sjukskrivningarna ökar eller håller samma nivå år efter år. Så nu kan vi börja fråga oss om gymkort och dagens företagshälsovård är det som en arbetsgivare ska satsa på eller är det en metod som är 30 år gammal och som behöver revideras?!
I en rapport från OSHA, European Agency for Safe and Health at Work känner Nordiska medarbetare sig 74 % mer stressade/pressade jämfört de övriga europeiska länderna.
Det handlar om arbetssätt, självinsikt, ledarskap
Oavsett om du vill ha nöjdare kunder, bättre produkter, tjäna mer pengar så handlar allt om arbetssätt dvs hur de som har ett speciellt ansvar löser sina arbetsuppgifter individuellt och tillsammans med andra på ett bra sätt.
Att chefer och medarbetare ser sig själva som en viktig del i ett team och förstå sin del i en större process är oerhört viktigt för att en verksamhet ska bli riktigt framgångsrik. Nu tänker du att det finns många företag som inte alls ser på sina medarbetare på det sättet och ändå tjänar väldigt mycket pengar. Tänk då hur mycket de hade tjänat om deras medarbetare mått bra. Forskning visar att ett företags kvalitetsbristkostnader ligger på 20-70 %.
Hur uppstår då kvalitetsbristkostnader? Jo, genom att en chef eller medarbetare inte följer ett arbetssätt eller en policy på jobbet. Mobbing och kränkning, utanförskap, stress, otydliga roller tillsammans med en tuff hemmasituation kan knäcka vem som helst. Men har vi så dåliga arbetsplatser? Det behöver inte vara så att arbetsplatsen är dålig. Det kan vara en individ eller flera med en dålig självkännedom och/eller dålig självkänsla som upplever kränkning, mobbing och utanförskap kanske kombinerat med problem i relation hemma. Oavsett anledning så finns problemet och det kan bli ett problem för en hel arbetsgrupp som kan te sig omöjligt att lösa och som resulterar i sjukskrivningar, långa eller korta och med ökade kvalitetsbristkostnader.
Detta betyder att vi måste erbjuda våra medarbetare en helt ny typ av företagshälsa. En som aktivt arbetar med och följer medarbetaren kontinuerligt. Latin, originated as one of the Delphic maxims. Today, in modern Psychology
it is called Self-knowledge, but do you know the real health status of your
employees?
Modern industrialization has relied upon Kaizen
Economics, Lean and Agile initiatives to shorten production times,
streamline services and tweak risk assessments to perfection. Excellent for the
bottom line, but extremely detrimental to long-term human sustainability. The
modern age has quite literally overtaken our biological ability to mentally
recharge.
Time pressure is positioned on a slippery slope that
increases corporate risk exponentially as the mental health burdens the need
for innovation and creativity. When corporate cultures become toxic incubators
instead of innovators, companies are forced to delve out billions to purchase
external products, that they failed to develop internally, to feed their
distribution channels. A good example is Microsoft, the world?s leader in
software development that spent $13 billion to purchase SKYPE. Your company is
at risk if you cannot spend the time to create and innovate.
Today, boardrooms are quite literally in the dark when
making strategic decisions using their traditional risk & probability
impact analyses. Long-term sustainable performance and growth are directly
connected to their corporate mental health capacity.
Reliable corporate risk assessments should provide soft data

In the 2017 United Nations report about the Myths
and Realities about Mental Health and Work in OECD countries; and the
findings suggest that at any one moment around 5% of the working-age population

supporting mental illness in the United States is 17% of the total healthcare
spend. In 2017, the USA spend $2.8 Trillion in healthcare and mental health?s
contribution is therefore a staggering $476 Billion annually. Moreover,
according to the CDC, U.S. anti-depressant use jumps 96% in just 15 years
(between 1999 to 2014) and one in eight over the age of twelve take
anti-depressives on a long-term basis for depression or anxiety.
In Sweden for example, one of the reported to be top five
happiest places in the world, 65% of all workplace related sick leave is
directly connected to psychological ill-health. Poor mental health leading to
an embedded corporate culture that can take years to repair, very costly with
countless wasted hours that could have been spent on innovation instead. Far
more expensive than any proactive program like My-E-Health® offers.
According to the Mental Health Foundation in the U.K., ?1 in
6.8 people experience mental health problems in the workplace (14.7%). Women in
full-time employment are almost twice as likely to have a mental health problem
as compared to their male counterparts (19.8% vs 10.9%). Evidence also suggests
that 12.7% of all sickness absence days in the UK are attributed to mental
health issues. Using online CBT to manage the problem, companies can

illness costs America $193.2 billion in lost earnings every year and 18.5%
(43.8 million people) experience mental health illness in a given year.
Mental Exhaustion or Burnout is a company risk and it

Even working employees with a heightened degree of anxiety, stress and/or defense routines impair productivity

Psykisk ohälsa har många ansikten. Läge fanns det en nidbild
om personer som gick in i väggen. I dag vet vi bättre. Alla har vi en
anhörig, nära vän, kollega, granne eller annan som har eller är sjukskriven för
utmattning. Några inser sitt problem
i tid och tar hjälp medan andra har lever med symtomen under många år och när
sjukskrivningen väl blir ett faktum är vägen tillbaka lång. En del kan aldrig
återgå till det arbets- och privatliv de tidigare haft. Försäkringskassan skrev
redan 2015 i en av sina Korta analyser- Långa sjukskrivningar att de befarar
att sjukskrivningar upp till 5 år kommer att öka och året efter kom en annan Korta analyser- Psykisk ohälsa där man bl.a. redovisade 100.000 nya
sjukskrivningar inom ramen för psykisk ohälsa under 5 år (2010-2015) och att
kvinnor var överrepresenterade. Tyvärr har det bara fortsatt och i dag är ca 50
% av alla sjukskrivningar inom ramen för psykisk ohälsa och mörkertalet är
enormt. Smärta vet man har en stark koppling och i många fall grundorsaken till
fysiska symtom som inte ligger i diagnosgruppen F00-F99.
Ingen Qvick-Fix
Många företag vill ha utbildning i "early warnings", appar
med några frågor varje vecka eller dag. Självklart finns det vissa gemensamma
indikatorer men det varierar så oerhört och koppling mellan arbetssituation,
personens självkänsla och privatlivet är oerhört komplext. Att tolka ett
resultat och få insikt är ofta svårt och kräver utbildade personer och undersökningsmetoder som är utvecklade baserade på vetenskap och beprövad
erfarenhet. Få chefer har den grundutbildningen.
Medarbetarundersökningen

Vi bygger upp försvarsrutiner för att dölja vår dåliga självkänsla vilket gör att omgivningen kan uppfatta oss som tex. väldigt självständiga, ensamvargar, otrevliga, ambitiösa. Detta kan leda till stress, utanförskap, konflikter osv på arbetsplatsen och i nära relationer vilket i sin tur kan leda till psykisk ohälsa i mindre eller större omfattning.

resultat leder till utveckling och förståelse
Vår
undersökningsmetod är utvecklad och kopplad till Lunds Universitet, Karlstads
Universitet, Sciens College, m m. Skalan vi använder är inbyggd i våra fyra
basbedömningar Empowerment for Participation (EFP). Att utmana någon genom en
standard Burnout Assessment som Copenhagen Burnout Inventory är kan tyvärr
resultera i ett missvisande resultat. Varje kvartal redovisas organisationens
status utan att källan
någonsin röjs. HR och ledningsgrupper kan använda data som underlag för
strategiska och operativa beslut, den
psykosociala ställningen före, under och efter förändringsprocessen, intern
riskanalys m m. Resultatet är framförallt viktigt för individen. Genom
att samma frågeställningar sker över tid och att coachning, för stöd i att
tolka resultat och föreslå aktiviteter, sker i samband med resultat så ser
också medarbetaren att det sker en positiv utveckling inte bara i känsla utan

Judge a company by how it treats its employees, not just by its rhetoric.
A company is as good as it treats its employees. Environmental sustainability is also about employee psychological well-being and company health. Many talk the talk, but few really walk the talk.
The well talked about Toyota efficiency and Kaizen methodologies may make the bookkeeper happy and improve quarterly bonuses for top management, but it also produces the largest turnover rates and highest mental exhaustion rates in the world today. Burnout or mental
exhaustion stems from a complex composite of variables and poor bubble
management. It slowly compiles and sneaks up upon you and when it bites, your

All the hype about

Burnout is a company risk as it affects your most
productive employees and its effects can last for more than 2 years! Whether or
not you are the Chairman of the Board or the HR Director, real-time knowledge related to the health and wellbeing of your company becomes a critical parameter in any
risk analysis. Burnout directly impacts your operations, current or planned initiatives,
customer service and overall performance. When ignoring this risk, you are not
only doing a disservice to your organization, but you are also directly
impacting the health and wellbeing of your employees.
Measuring
burnout is not accomplished by simply measuring stress with an APP nor is it
achieved by delegating the responsibility onto over-stretched middle managers
whom are already feeling the pressure. It is a complex composite of situational
variables embedded within your company culture that touches all employees. It
is not one thing, but a myriad of things like organizational caring, company
politics, lack of vision, poor communication, lack of resources, poor leadership,
lack of limits on overtime, overly ambitious Kaizen 5S & Agile constraints,
team dynamics and much more. Losing a single employee due to burnout is your responsibility
and a corporate responsibility too. Management is about managing, including
managing how we lead, it is not only about Kaizen economics, bonuses and
egos. Sustainability requires a caring organizational philosophy and corporate
social responsibility embedded into the code of conduct.

I often refer to the chronic
regressive identity trap (CRIT) where individuals get caught up in a whirlwind
of negative thoughts related to their environment, situation or physical wellbeing.
In the workplace the implosion of time and space, over-cooked Lean and Agile
initiatives all contribute to both psychosomatic burnout and overall company
wellbeing. In healthcare, patients with chronic ailments identify with their somatic
illnesses reinforcing defenses that focus on protecting the ailment rather than
managing a way forward. Some people make an effort to move forward whilst
others dwell and ferment their negative or thought routines without actionable resolutions.
If your corporate
wellbeing does not include proactive psychological methods then you are simply
playing Russian Roulette with your employees. Burnout not only affects your
most productive employees, but its effects can last for many years. In the U.K.
psychological illnesses cost over £100 billion annually. In Sweden, Skandia
Insurance estimated psychological illness costs to be 32 billion Kronor annually.
There are only 5.01 million employees in Sweden, meaning that each employed
Swede needs to pay 6275kr extra in taxes to pay for these costs. Current trends
show an unabated 14% increase in psychological ill-health.

Firstly, I would like to thank you all for the 307 e-mails that I received
so far in regard to my last blog post. I was surprised by the number and how passionate
you all feel about your working environments, a record for one of my posts. I
agree wholeheartedly with you and thank you for your examples and for confirming
what we already know to be true. There is a real disconnect between employee
wellbeing, Lean initiatives and Corporate Objectives, nonetheless, not all are
detrimental to employee health and wellbeing. I also understand why many have elected
to write e-mails to me instead of commenting online, that is just fine with me,
and feel free to continue to do so in the future. I also understand that even
in a modern society, it is not easy to raise discontent. I will certainly keep
your e-mails confidential. After all, finding a balance with My-E-Health will benefit
all parties and stakeholders.
I must also admit that I am a statistical nerd and also believe in evidence-based
measures to make decisions. I also realize that some Lean Initiatives seem to
have taken Kaizen budget cutting to an extreme with focus on fanatically
improving process without regard to parameters affecting the human psychological
wellbeing within their equation. Not only is this evident in our own stats but
in the 307 e-mails received.
For organizations to be competitive and improve, initiatives must come
from within. Management has the obligation to insure the existence of the right
environment. Innovation does not just happen. Management should insure that the
environment nurtures empowerment. Empowerment will eventually lead to a creative
willingness to reach for the stars and make suggestions. Mechanisms to
recognize excellence and to proactively enhance psychological wellbeing are key
and instrumental. These should provide your teams with the space to think and grow.
Providing time to read and reflect on Standard Operating Procedures (should all
be available if ISO certified) and by interacting with other team members on a
creative basis will all lead to smooth transitions.
If employee psychological health and wellbeing are to improve, an equilibrium
between Lean Workplace Changes and Human Psychometric Measures needs to be implemented.
The pendulum has swung too far to the efficiency scale on the right and needs
to center. Psychological ill-health (depression, anxiety and stress) is now responsible
for more than 50% of all lost sick days and 90 percent of any reduction in performance.
If quality and sustainability are important to your organization, then
change measures should be accompanied by psychometric data. If Lean change or workplace
conditions are affecting performance or wellbeing of your staff then any enlightenment
to the fact should be extremely beneficial. Change always brings increased stress
and defense routines and lower motivation, however, if successful these
psychological measures will settle and improve by the next quarter. Knowledge of
these fundamental psychometrics provides a timely advantage.

Lean Six Sigma &
Agile might synergize when it comes to cutting out the causes of waste or defects

Do you know the health

What is chronic pain
and can it be effectively managed without opioids and anti-depressives? Can we

About 55% of the world
population lives with some form of chronic pain and the older we get the more
prevalent it seems to become. Just getting out of bed and going to the bathroom
seems like a chore for many with chronic pain. Chronic pain lasting longer than
3-6 months is framed in many diagnoses from cancer to HIV/AIDS to skin
conditions, Arthritis in all its forms, back pain, knees, shoulders, feet,
hips, and in the direst of cases terminal. All pain uses the same communication
circuitry to our brains and is independently interpreted by thresholds. Coping
and treating these varying thresholds is not easy.
Chronic pain treatment
is as diverse as it is effective. Doctors use everything from muscle relaxants,
anti-inflammatories, to opioids, anti-depressives and many others. Opioids are
often standard for terminal and other acute (first 2 weeks) pain treatments,
however, there are consequences in long-term use. The opioid addiction crisis is
now an epidemic all over the world. It is easy to write a prescription and move
on to the next patient, but is that in the best interest of the patient? Too
much pain stress without the ability to recharge causes many psychosomatic
symptoms that can lead to everything from depression, anxiety, and in extreme
cases suicide. Should opioid prescriptions be restricted to a short list of
diagnoses? It is certainly a slippery slope and extremely hard to balance.
Chronic pain is also linked to exhaustion that can be associated to a form of burnout
or chronic stress gone too far.

This leads me to

The saying, "It is all in your mind," did not simply emerge out of thin air. If
evolution has taught one thing, it has enlightened us to the power of our minds.
Our ability to will effect, both positive and negative. Our minds are the most
powerful tools in our universe. So, how we look at situations is instrumental
in how we deal with the onslaught of both internal and external demands.
Eustress (stress under
control) produces many beneficial hormones. Too much stress without the ability
to recharge can cause many psychosomatic symptoms that can lead to everything
from cancer to depression, anxiety, and others. Cortisol is good in short
bursts, but in the long-term it is suspected to cause plaque buildup in the
brain leading to various forms of dementia.
The myriad of
consultants, healthcare professionals and managers preaching self-help techniques that are only short lived, if you are not sold on the idea. Self-awareness, puts you
in control of your mind and the protection of your bubble. We all live in
bubbles. Some bubbles are permeable, others flexible, and some rather rigid.
Your mind controls the flexibility of your bubble. Are you going to crack line
an egg shell or bounce like a ball? Believe it or not, you can control your
wellbeing within your environment. Being mindful is not about meditating nor
does it have to be about hocus-pocus stuff. It is about being aware of you in the
moment, taking the time to contemplate how you want to react to a given
situation, evaluating yourself within your environment and making the most out
of your place.
In Psychology we talk
a lot about cognition and logically understanding the forces affecting you in
any given situation. Treatment usually take two paths, action or acceptance.
